The Creation of Paul Dibble Introduction:

Paul Dibble, a sculptor from New Zealand, is headquartered in North Palmerston and established his own bronze casting foundry in Cloverlea in 2000, producing large-scale works. He is one of the few New Zealand sculptors who undertake large-scale casting themselves. Using bronze as his medium, Dibble’s creations often reference the apple in the Garden of Eden in several works, while others delve into various aspects of New Zealand history, such as Maori fish hooks, Captain Cook, sheep, and agriculture. Native wildlife and plants, particularly the huia and kōwhai, frequently appear in his pieces.

In his large-scale representational sculptures cast in bronze, Dibble draws inspiration from contemporary and historical objects from his homeland of New Zealand and the surrounding Pacific. Aside from figures, these objects, like mermaids, animals, birds, and feathers, are sculpted in various styles and scales, ranging from surrealism to folk art, and from small-scale pieces at 350 millimeters to towering outdoor sculptures exceeding 18 feet. After sketching designs into precise line drawings, Dibble crafts wax and plywood models then casts the sculptures in his own foundry. Dibble primarily employs the lost wax and sand casting techniques for his metalwork, finishing his creations with patinas in various hues.
