What does the Rattlesnake Statue Represent FAMU?
Florida A&M’s mascot is the Rattlesnake. And, when the school relocated to Highwood Plantation in 1891, its rural landscape was home to an abundance of wildlife, especially rattlesnakes. The Rattlesnake embodies the inner resilience and perseverance of FAMU students.
Where is the FAMU Rattlesnake Statue?
The 1,800-pound, 42-foot bronze rattlesnake sits in front of Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) Center for Access and Student Success (CASS) building on Wahnish Way.
Rattlesnake Features:
Rattlesnakes generally have a body length of about 1.5 to 2 meters. Also, they are yellow-green in appearance with diamond-shaped dark brown spots on their backs. In addition, the tail of this snake has a string of horny rings at the end, which is the remnant of multiple molts. When they encounter an enemy or make a rapid movement, they would quickly swing the tail ring on their tail. Moreover, they could make loud noises for a long time, causing the enemy to dare not approach or be scared away, so they are called rattlesnakes.
