A man sits alone on a rock, absorbed in thought. He leans forward, with his elbow on his knee and hand supporting his chin. Clearly focused, he intently casts his eyes downward. It is not the one made under the life and the supervisor of Rodin, and the height of the figure is about 186cm. Like various other versions, there are several sizes of plaster, research, and some postmortem castings. Rodin came up with his first appearance as part of his work at the Gates of Hell in 1880, but until 1904, the first ever famous bronze castings did not appear.
Many of Rodin’s most famous works came out of this work. The thinker originally intended to represent Dante by sitting on the door and making poems. For this reason, the Thinker Statue was originally known as a poet, but since this work began to prevail over the gates of Hell, it became known as a thinker and now it is a symbol of common understanding of philosophy and learning.
The Rodin thinker statue was originally part of the compositional piece Rodin created as an entranceway for the proposed Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This piece, known as The Gates of Hell, is based on the 16th-century epic poem, The Divine Comedy by Dante.
