This marble pergola is built as a long, covered walkway rather than a single enclosed structure. A row of sculpted maidens on square plinths carries a continuous carved beam, and at the front, an arched bay framed by pilasters and capitals gives the walkway a formal entrance.
The white marble with soft gray veining suits both open sunlight and shaded planting. Along the length, low balustrade sections run between the plinths, so the pergola can define a path or garden edge while staying open to the view on either side.
Sculpted Maidens Along the Colonnade
The main feature of the design is the row of carved caryatid figures that take the place of ordinary columns. Each maiden stands on her own square plinth, with a veil over her head and a long pleated robe falling to the base, and each pose is slightly different so the row does not read as a repeated copy.
Two larger figures stand at the front on either side of the arch. The one on the left rests a hand at her waist while gathering her robe, and the one on the right holds a bundle of blossoms against her chest. Behind them, the smaller figures recede down the walkway, and the carved capitals above each head carry volutes and rosettes.
Carved Details on the Arch and Beam
The front arch is the most detailed part of the piece. Two winged cherubs fly on either side of the arch in high relief, and a cherub head between scrolled acanthus leaves sits at the center. Corinthian-style capitals top the pilasters, and each plinth carries a scrolled cartouche framed with leaves.
The long beam above the figures is carved with a continuous frieze of scrolling foliage and flowers, which runs the full length of the pergola and ties the figures, arch, and plinths into one composition.
