Matteo Pugliese was born in Milan in 1969. In 1978, his family moved to Sardinia and lived there for 12 years. During this time, he became interested in painting and sculpture, but he did not receive formal education. After completing his classic high school in Cagliari, he returned to Milan to go to college. In 1995, he received a degree in modern literature from the University of Milan and received a thesis on art criticism.
In 2001, with the encouragement of his friends, Pugliese organized and funded his first personal exhibition. He rent a private exhibition space in the center of Milan gor his first exhibition. Just 18 months later, his first official exhibition was held at a gallery in Brera, Milan, and a few months later he held a solo exhibition in Brussels.
