The details and proportions of the statue have been carefully considered to showcase the essence of the art and technology of boilermaking. Overall, the statue is presented through meticulous carving and precise details, showing the audience the working scene and skills of the boilermaker, as well as the concentration and proficiency of the workers.

Origin of Boilermaker Sculpture:

In West Lafayette, Indiana, Purdue University held a dedication ceremony on November 4 to celebrate the completion of a bronze statue titled “The Boilermaker.” The statue, which stands 18 feet tall and weighs 5,400 pounds, is located on North University Avenue between the intercollegiate athletic facilities and the Mollenkopf Athletic Center.

As part of the ceremony, Purdue University paid tribute to Eugene R. Groteness and his family. The Greatness family had strong ties to Purdue University and this statue was built in their honor. Three generations of Grotenis family members have attended or are currently attending Purdue.

The statue’s design was inspired by boilermakers and skilled craftsmen of the past and present. Sculptor Jon Hair of Cornelius, North Carolina, began work on the $500,000 statue in 2003 and installed it in September.

One of the Famous Monumental Sculptors:
