Sculpture Introduction:
This stunning marble sculpture depicts the famous fallen angel Lucifer. We could see the fallen angel all sitting on a rock, protected by folded wings; his upper body, arms and legs are bare, and his mid-part hair is as long as the nape of his neck. The choroidal membranous wings are hinged like a bat and have a prominent thumb claw; the knobby, robust olecranon combines bat and human anatomy to create an illusion of realism. On the right hip is a broken scepter and a peeled crown. A tear fell from the angel’s left eye. A vivid image of Lucifer is thus displayed in front of people.
The original Lucifer sculpture was created by Belgian artist Guillaume Gieves and is a religious sculpture. Made in white marble in 1848. French art historians often refer to the figure as angel déchu or “fallen angel”. This sculpture is located on the delicate pulpit of St Paul’s Cathedral in Liege. Geefs’ work replaces an earlier sculpture, L’ange du mal, created for the space by his brother Joseph Geefs, which was removed from the cathedral for its distracting charm and “unhealthy beauty” remove.
