Historical Background

This lion sculpture was erected to commemorate the heavy sacrifices made during the Battle of Maiwand in 1880, a pivotal engagement of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. During the battle, the Berkshire Regiment was ambushed and suffered devastating casualties. To honor the 329 soldiers who fell in action, the local community raised funds to commission this monument, establishing it as an enduring memorial to the fallen.

Significance of the Sculpture

Through the imagery of a roaring, striding male lion, the sculpture symbolizes the soldiers’ indomitable will and fighting spirit in the face of desperate odds. As a “guardian” of the Victorian era, it embodies a dual emotional resonance—serving simultaneously as an expression of mourning and a solemn warning. Its exquisite anatomical detail renders it a masterpiece of realist art; today, it has evolved into an irreplaceable spiritual landmark for the city of Reading.

Professional Clay Mold Studio and Artists:

These lion statues require a 1:1 clay model before casting. You Fine has a professional clay mold studio and masters who are good at making animal clay molds. Because our master has sufficient experience in animal carving. So our artists could carve the lion’s hair and body structures very vividly and realistically.

In addition, the clay mold our masters made would undergo repeated modifications to ensure the most perfect effect and show the essence of the lion. To ensure complete fidelity to the original design concept, we meticulously crafted a life-size, 1:1 clay model measuring 160 centimeters in length, with its height and width precisely scaled to proportion.

Our artists are currently refining the clay model.
