The Mother of Napoleon, Letizia Bonaparte, was born in Corsica on August 24, 1749 or in 1750, when it was part of the Republic of Genoa. She is a descendant of a reputable Tuscan family that has been established for several generations in Corsica. In 1764, she married the young and handsome Carlo-Maria Buonaparte, who was studying law. They had a total of thirteen children, eight of whom survived (five boys: Joseph, Napoleon, Lucien, Louis and Jerome; and three girls: Elisa, Pauline and Caroline).
In the early days of their marriage, political complications had affected the lives of the young couple, especially in 1768 when France acquired Corsica a few months before Napoleon was born. During this time, the family was also in a very dangerous financial situation. When her husband died in 1785, Letizia Bonaparte struggled in economic difficulties. Only when Letizia’s second son, Napoleon, began to rise in the Republican army, the family’s financial situation began to improve. When Napoleon was appointed Marshall, the battlefield of the domestic army in October 1795, he was able to help his family.
