Igor Mitoraj was a Polish artist best known for his fragmented sculptures of the human body. Often created for large-scale public installations, his monumental works referenced the struggle and suffering of 20th-century Europe.
Igor Mitoraj spent most of his life in the West, mainly in France and Italy. The Colombian sculptor Fernando Pole Bolero, one of the most expensive contemporary artists in the world, urged him to buy a house in Pietrasanta, the Italian capital of marble, city of sculptors, where artists such as Michelangelo worked.
Mitoraj considered this Italian studio ‘his place on Earth’ though he had lived in Paris, tried to settle in Mexico to learn the art of the Aztecs, and travelled around Greece studying ancient works of art.
Deeply rooted in the classical tradition, Igor Mitoraj sculpts broken or severed fragments of the male form, with an eye for the theatrical that is grounded in years spent working on set designs and costumes for operas.
All the sculptures appear to be broken fragments of heads, busts, faces, as if we are all incomplete. They all have a distinct look to them. Since the sculptor graduated from art school in Krakow, I guess it is appropriate to install one of his large works in the center of Krakow. These are high level interpretations, but his work is sought after.
