The positions of the shoulders, arms, waist and legs must work together. A small change in one area can affect the balance and visual movement of the entire sculpture. It is also not enough for the sculpture to look convincing from the front. The proportions of the sides and back must remain natural because this type of sculpture is often viewed from every direction.

A Brief Background of Rodin’s The Kiss
Rodin originally developed the embracing couple as Paolo and Francesca, two figures from Dante’s Divine Comedy. The group was later separated from The Gates of Hell and became an independent sculpture. The French state commissioned the enlarged marble version in 1888.
