Question: What does Jesus mean when he says, ‘ I am a good shepherd ‘?

The answer: “I am The Good Shepherd” (John 10:11) is the fourth of the seven “I Am” in the Gospel of Jesus only recorded in John. These “I am” declarations point to his unique divine identity and purpose. Jesus declared “I am a good shepherd” immediately after he declared him a “gateway” in the Gospel of John 10:7. He described himself not only as a “shepherd”, but as a “Good Shepherd”.

What does that mean? It should be understood that Jesus is “a good shepherd, not simply” is a good shepherd, because other people may, but his character (unique Psalm 23; 13:7; Hebrews 13:20; Peter’s former 2:25; Peter’s book 5:4). The Greek word Kalos translates as “good”, which describes the noble, healthy, beautiful, pretty things that are contrary to evil, mean, dirty and unfriendly things. It not only means that intrinsic good characteristics, but also shows the external attraction. This is innate goodness. Therefore, in the use of the word “Good Shepherd”, Jesus quotes his inherent goodness, his righteousness and his beauty. As the shepherd of the sheep, he is the one who protects, guides and nurtures his flock.

As he declared himself “the door of the sheep” in John 10:7, Jesus was contrasting himself with the religious leader of the Pharisees (John 10:12-13). He likened them to a “hired man” or a “hired hand”, and he did not really care about the sheep. In John 10:9, Jesus spoke of thieves and robbers sneaking into the fold. In that passage, the Jewish leader (the Pharisee) was in contrast to Christ, and he was a disciple. In John 10:12, the hired hand contrasts with a true or faithful shepherd willing to lay down his life for the sheep.

He is a “hire” employee and his salary is his main consideration. He doesn’t care about the sheep but himself. Interestingly, the ancient shepherds were usually not masters of the flock. Nevertheless, they should take the same care and attention to the owners. This is the characteristic of a true shepherd. However, some employees only think of themselves. As a result, when a wolf appears-this is the most common threat on the day of the sheep-the hired hands gave up the flock to escape, leaving only the sheep scattered or killed (John 10:12-13).
