The North Carolina Zoo American Large Black Bronze Bison BOKK-503

The name of the large black bronze bison is Black Dog. This bronze sculpture was designed and cast by Bob and Bonnie Meeker. The artists have studied the nature, physiology, and folklore of bison for a long time. Among them, there is a bison named Black Dog that is the most representative. 

It is one of the largest bulls recorded. And this bison embodies the outstanding contributions and great deeds made by people to protect wildlife. The image of the bronze bison sculpture shows the characteristics of the magnificent wildlife on the plains.

About the Artist Donna Dobberfuhl:

Donna received her MFA with honors from the New York Academy of Art’s New York Graduate School of Figurative Art and works with a variety of media, including bronze, water and mosaic, steel, copper, cast stone, and the ancient tradition of carved bricks. The bronze bison sculpture Black Dog is one of her works.

The legend of the Bison Black Dog can be traced back to the history and culture of the North American prairie. In the 19th century, the North American bison (also known as American bison or prairie bison) was once on the verge of extinction, but fortunately, through the efforts of global conservation organizations, these magnificent bison are now showing an encouraging momentum for a comeback.

During this process, a bull named “Black Dog” attracted people’s attention.  “Black Dog” is one of the largest bulls on record. It is not only known for its huge size but also for its unique character and story. “Black Dog” symbolizes the leader or guardian of the bison herd, and its existence brings hope and strength to other bison.
