Saint Michael the Archangel is referenced in the Old Testament and has been part of Christian teachings since the earliest times. In Catholic writings and traditions he acts as the defender of the Church, and chief opponent of Satan; and assists souls at the hour of death.
In Roman Catholicism, St. Michael has four different roles.
Role 1: The Enemy of Satan and the Fallen Angel
He will defeat Satan, expel him from paradise and will achieve victory at the time of the last battle with Satan.
St. Michael is seen as commander of the army of God. From the time of the apostle, he was called as a guardian of the church and has been honored. The Bible says that he is “one of the chiefs” and is the leader of the forces of heaven in victory over the power of hell.
Role 2: Christian Angel of Death
At the time of death, St Michael gets down and gives each soul the opportunity to redeem himself before passing away.
St. Michael is one of the angels presumed to exist at the time of death. Traditionally, he is accused against helping to die and accompanying their souls with their particular judgment he serves as defender. The chapel of the cemetery is often dedicated to him.
Role 3: St. Michael is to Weigh the Soul on the Day of Judgment
In Catholic tradition, on Judgment Day Saint Michael weighs souls based on their deeds during their life on earth. Saint Michael is often portrayed in art with scales. This role of Saint Michael was depicted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
In this depiction, angels hold up two books: the smaller book held by Saint Michael records the names of the blessed, while the larger book is a list of the damned.
Role 4: St. Michael is the Guardian of the Church
Michael’s tradition as a Jewish prince guardian was adopted by the Christian church. St. Michael has long been recognized as a guardian and guardian of the church itself and as an angel of blessed sacraments.
In the speech of 2007, Pope Benedict XVI denied his denial, thereby protecting the greatness of human beings, to welcome Michael into the world as an example for acting as a “true guardian angel” of the church St. Michael, who was appointed as the guardian angel of the Pope, is protected not only as a specific occupation but also as a guardian angel of many countries.
Drawn in religious art as a young man, he is also winged, handsome, and wears armor with a supporting knife and shield to fight against the dragon. At other times, he was known to have the scale of justice. These symbols represent his strength and courage, as he is constantly moving against the flow of evil.
