The History and Significance of the Original Diana the Huntress Statue

The original Diana the Huntress statue is a unique example of French 18th-century sculpture created by Jean-Antoine Houdon. Houdon presented Diana in a new light, portraying her naked and running, in contrast to the static and idealized Diana of his predecessors, who were dressed in a tunic as a symbol of virginity. The statue features all of Diana’s usual attributes, including a bow, arrows, and the moon in the last quarter on her head. However, due to the excessive weight of the marble, Houdon was forced to create support points, including a clump of aquatic plants at the base and a quiver of arrows to consolidate her left arm.

The Diana the Huntress statue originally belonged to Catherine II, Empress of Russia, and was on display at the Hermitage Museum. Its popularity was due to a number of factors, including the scandal caused by her complete nudity, which was regarded as excessive and inappropriate at the time.
