This sculpture of the Virgin holding Jesus is copied from the famous Madonna of Bruges statue by Michelangelo. We could see that the design of this statue is different from the common Jesus and Mary sculptures. This sculpture shows us the image of a seated Virgin holding the baby Jesus. The pious Madonna smiles at the baby in her arms. Instead, Jesus stood upright, with little support, only loosely bound by Mary’s left hand, as if to leave his mother. Meanwhile, instead of holding on to her son tightly or even looking at him, Mary stared down.

Michelangelo’s depiction of Madonna and Jesus is very different from earlier depictions of the same subject. The Madonna of Bruges statue was created in Italy and exported to Belgium in 1504. It does not show a loving and warm mother staring at her child; instead, it depicts a mother grieving for her son’s future. It is believed that the piece was originally designed for an altarpiece. If so, then it would appear slightly to the right and down.
