The kiss statue originally represented Paul and Francesca in the “Divine Comedy” of Daniel Alighieri (1265-1321). The two lovers were killed by the husband of Francesca while they were kissing. This bronze sculpture was originally conceived by Rodin in the creation of The Door of Hell. The French government ordered an expanded marble version, and Rodin spent nearly a decade delivering it.
